    Why This Recipe Works

I’ve never been a big fan of Halloween. But I’m starting to like it simply for the fun recipes you can make!

Every year, I mix myself a cocktail to enjoy while the kids trick-or-treat (why should kids have all the fun!?). This year I’m going to bring along a Halloween Moscow Mule!

It’s creepy and black but still tastes delicious! And I used spiced rum to give it even more flavor!

I don’t like the gory Halloween stuff. But I do like things when they are just sort of weird. And this is. It’s a spooky Moscow Mule that is also super tasty.

Just like the classic Moscow Mule, this recipe needs only a few ingredients and is really quick to make.

Also, be sure to check out my Black Punch with vodka! It’s great for a Halloween party or group of moms about to walk all over the neighborhood with sugared-up kids.

Looking to sip something that screams fall? Try an Apple Cider Whiskey Mule or Pumpkin Spice Margarita.

I really love the flavors of spiced rum. It adds in a nice touch of cinnamon and vanilla without being overpowering. I used a limited edition of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. But you can use regular spiced rum if you have it.

Fresh lime juice, blackberries, and rosemary add herbaceous, fruity flavor and give this Blackberry Moscow Mule tons of flavor.

Coconut activated charcoal powder is the perfect way to make a drink black without really changing the flavors. Plus it is supposed to have really great benefits.

I used to take an activated charcoal capsule to help me with hangovers (not a doctor – not health advice and I now use these hangover supplements) because mine are super atrocious. But it’s also great for digestion and cleaning teeth. You can find out all about it here.

Ginger beer is just a classic Moscow Mule flavor so it’s a must. Do not use Ginger Ale. It’s too sweet and lacks the bite of ginger.

Adding a splash of prosecco or sparkling wine really brought out the fruity side. It’s a trick I’ve learned over the years. A splash of bubbles can really help a so-so drink.

You can skip this, or use Chambord (blackberry liquor) instead, but I think the best flavors come out with it. Don’t want to add any more alcohol? You can add a little simple syrup instead.

Adding a little sweetness can really help balance a cocktail if it feels like it’s missing something.

How to Make a Halloween Mule

Adding blackberries to a copper Moscow Mule mug.

To a copper Moscow Mule mug, add fresh blackberries, leaves from one sprig of rosemary, and lime juice.

Muddle it to release all of the flavors. This cute copper set has all the tools you need.

Pouring in rum for Moscow mule.

    Add spiced rum.

Check out my Moscow Mule with Rum if you are looking for something a little less evil. Mwauahahaha. That was my evil laugh because this post is about a Halloween drink…

Adding coconut activated charcoal to drinks.

    Add the activated charcoal.

Hand stirring a Blackberry Moscow Mule in a copper mug.

Use a bar spoon to mix well.

Adding ginger beer fo the Halloween mule drink.

Add ice and top with ginger beer. Use about 2-3 ounces. It may not fill the cup all the way up but to keep the flavors balanced, you only want a few ounces. You don’t want your Halloween Moscow Mule to only taste like ginger beer.

Adding rosemary garnish to a Halloween Moscow Mule.

Top the Blackberry Moscow Mule drink with prosecco or sparkling wine (or simple syrup). Garnish with a rosemary sprig and eyeballs. I guess the eyeballs can be optional.

But really, it’s Halloween. Eyeballs should be a given. (They are not edible. Just creepy). You could even glue or stick one on a skewer to make a fun garnish.

    Tips and Tricks

    • The blackberry flavor just wasn’t coming through when I first made this Halloween Moscow Mule. In this recipe, I muddle the fruit and herb together but it is a pretty subtle flavor. For an even more concentrated flavor, you can use blackberry simple syrup (or buy one here). I don’t love sweet drinks so I prefer to muddle. But they are a great way to add more concentrated flavors to cocktails.
    • I don’t mind having pieces of fruit or herbs in my cocktail. But if you do mind, you can strain the cocktail. Use a cocktail pitcher to make the drink and strain as you pour into the copper mug. Or if you really wanted to, you could make this Halloween Mule in a cocktail shaker and then double strain it from there into a glass with ice.
    • If you aren’t a fan of rosemary, you can swap it out for almost any other fresh herb.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use activated charcoal in other recipes?

Yes! I also used activated charcoal to make a Vodka Halloween Punch. It’s a yummy citrus punch that is totally black! You could even just add it to apple juice if you want to make a spooky drink for the kids.

Is activated charcoal safe to eat?

Yes. It’s perfectly safe to consume in small amounts, but if you take certain medications it can impact how they work. Always err on the side of caution and check with your doctor if you have concerns.

    What’s in a Moscow Mule?

A traditional Moscow Mule is made with vodka, lime juice, ginger beer and finished with a sprig of mint. They can sometimes include a few dashes of bitters or a little bit of simple syrup. It’s a great cocktail base that can be modified with all kinds of flavors like my Holiday Mule or Green Mule for St. Patrick’s Day.

Do you have to use a copper mug?

No. BUT – a copper mug is designed to keep a cocktail super chilled and extra refreshing. A Blackberry Moscow Mule is delicious when sipped from a copper mug but will still taste great from another glass.

Serve this Halloween Mule with my Halloween Dump Cake or some Pie Cake for a super creepy happy hour.
