Pumpkin Spice Margaritas are Perfect for Fall
Whether you're hosting a big holiday meal, Friendsgiving, or just want to sip on something in the evening, this Pumpkin Margarita recipe is just what you've been looking for.
Pumpkin season basically starts in October (this would also make a great Halloween margarita!) and goes into December. But the great thing is, for true pumpkin lovers, it can be any time of year!
Chances are you already have canned pumpkin on hand for all your holiday baking. So why not grab a little bit and make yourself a delicious cocktail?
I had never had canned pumpkin in a cocktail before this year. I was not sure how the consistency would be. But you don't need much to get all that great pumpkin flavor.
The other liquids in the recipe ensure that it isn't thick. I promise you won't think you're sucking down a piece of pumpkin pie. You will truly enjoy this Thanksgiving Margarita.
Be sure to check out more of my easy pumpkin cocktails! Try a Tangy Pumpkin Michelada or Pumpkin Moscow Mule. And if you want to skip the alcohol, make a Salted Caramel Pumpkin Pie Milkshake.
Ingredient Notes
I always start out with a basic recipe, that I put together based on other cocktails I've made before, and work from there.
After I made my first round, I knew I needed to tweak it to make it even better. So I added fresh lime juice, ginger and cayenne. They aren't pictured, but you MUST use them to get the best results.
- Orange Juice
- pumpkin pie spice
- Reposado tequila
- fresh lime juice (not pictured, but needed!)
- pumpkin puree
- agave syrup
- ginger (not pictured)
- cayenne (not pictured)
I didn't have any pumpkin pie spice at home so I made my own from the spices I had. But you can use store-bought.
Most tequila cocktails use blanco tequila. But I decided to go with reposado as it's aged and I thought it would have a little bit more of a rich, caramel-y flavor. You can substitute whatever you have without much flavor difference.
The orange juice helps cut the squash flavor of the canned pumpkin and the agave is a natural pairing for tequila cocktails. You could use simple syrup instead if you prefer (HACK ALERT: Here's how to make enough simple syrup for just one drink in 1 minute!).
The lime juice, ginger and cayenne really help to balance the flavors. The cayenne hits the back of your throat and is a fantastic little kick of heat that you didn't even know you wanted.
So while I wouldn't consider this a spicy margarita, it's a perfect fall margarita.
How to Make a Pumpkin Margarita
How to Rim Your Glass
To rim the glass, use a quarter of lime to wet the rim. You don't have to do the whole glass, in fact, I prefer to just do a smaller section.
Dip the lime-rubbed rim into a plate of pumpkin pie spice. Then. set your prepared glass aside until your cocktail is ready.
Steps to Make Margarita
In a cocktail shaker add orange juice, pumpkin pie spice, tequila, lime juice, pumpkin puree, agave syrup, ginger and cayenne.
Add ice and shake well.
Strain Pumpkin Margarita into your prepared glass over fresh ice.
This delicious pumpkin margarita for fall is easy to make and super yummy!
The pumpkin flavor isn't overpowering. You'll get those perfect fall vibes you want this time of year.
Tips and Tricks
- Want to make this feel more like fall? Clap some fresh sage between your palms and garnish your drink with it. The smell, as you bring your glass to your lips, is so YUM!
- Feel free to play around with the spices. If you aren't a fan of cayenne simply leave it out! Add cardamom or clove to make this drink recipe even more unique.
- While I prefer this Pumpkin Spice Margarita on the rocks, you can easily make this blended by adding the ingredients to a high-speed blender with extra ice. Consider adding a little Cointreau to add more flavor in case of dilution from the ice.
