Let’s make a delicious Moscow Mule with Coke.

I have my go-to cocktails that I love, but sometimes you just need something new. Coke makes a great cocktail mixer so I decided to give it a try in a Moscow Mule.

We know that Coke and Vodka is a simple drink to make at home. But a Moscow Mule with Coke elevates things a little.

Why This Recipe Works

A classic Moscow Mule is refreshing and flavorful and super easy to make. It’s a vodka-based drink that is made with ginger beer and lime juice.

They are great for people just starting out making drinks at home and don’t require specialty ingredients which is great if you are like me and like to keep your bar area from taking over your whole house but still make yummy drinks.

What you need to make a Coca-Cola Moscow Mule.

Grab your favorite vodka, some ginger beer, Coke, and lime.

You could use another kind of cola but it would be gross. (Can you tell I’m team Coke here? My husband is an avid Pepsi drinker. And somehow we’re still together…).

Instructions

Making a Moscow Mule with Coke is just as easy as making a traditional version. You don’t even need a cocktail shaker to make these.

1. Add ice to your mug

The copper mug keeps these drinks cold and adds an extra refreshing touch to this easy Coke mixed drink.

2. Add vodka, Coke and lime juice

Add the first 3 ingredients over the ice right in the mug.

3. Top with ginger beer

Finish off the drink with ginger beer. Do not fill the cup to the top with ginger beer as that can overpower the rest of the drink. 3-4 ounces, depending on your taste preferences is best.

There are some recipes online that just swap out the ginger beer and replace it with the Coke. But I LOVE ginger beer. So I like to use them both. Ginger beer has this bold, zesty taste that brings the slightest heat.

When Coke is mixed with other ingredients it really mellows out. I think using both keeps things zingy and fun.

You can make the choice when you’re making this recipe.

A quick stir blends everything perfectly and it’s ready to enjoy.

You can garnish with a fresh mint sprig, as you would with the classic recipe.

Or skip it! I do most of my grocery shopping online and fresh mint can be hard to come by. It won’t ruin anything if you don’t have it.

Variations

  • You can take the Coke Moscow Mule idea and try it with another type of soda. Using Sprite or 7Up in place of the cola will sweeten it up and play up the citrus flavors.
  • For a spicy twist, add a few dashes of hot sauce or muddle jalapeno in your drink.
  • If you prefer, you can make this drink without vodka and simply enjoy a refreshing cola with fresh lime. Or try a Moscow Mule Mocktail.
  • Tequila and Coke are also a match made in heaven so you could use tequila in place of vodka if you’re looking for another twist.
  • Of course, cherry coke would be amazing! Or use diet if that’s your thing.

Top tip

To get the most juice out of your lime use my favorite citrus squeezer! It washes perfectly in the dishwasher and wears super well. It’s pricy but worth it! Check out all my other favorite bar tools here.

These are best made fresh but if you are having friends over and want to make a bunch at once, the best thing to do is pre-squeeze lime juice so you can just measure and go. Line up your mugs and pour the ingredients in – assembly-line fashion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to use a copper mug?

No. But, yes. You can make any cocktail in any mug (in my non-bartender opinion). But a copper mug is special. The mug helps to keep the drink cold and refreshing. It really elevates the cocktail-sipping experience. And they’re just plain beautiful!
