Let’s Make This Tasty Moscow Mule Mocktail Recipe

This non-alcoholic Moscow Mule is based on the original Moscow Mule recipe, minus the vodka.

I’m obsessed with Moscow Mules. I love the kick that ginger beer gives them. It’s not quite spicy but still has a little bit of burn. YUM!

But lately, I have been craving wine and cocktails at times when I can’t have alcohol! Which is why this Mule Mocktail is perfect!

You know this is going to be a delicious drink recipe thanks to the fresh lime and ginger beer. If you’re a fan of the classic cocktail, you know you’ll love this! And you’ll love that you won’t wake up feeling crummy after a few of them even more.

Much like my non-alcoholic Soda Sangria, this easy virgin Moscow Mule recipe is great for kids and perfect to serve at any party (like a baby shower) where the guest of honor doesn’t drink.

Ingredients

Labeled ingredients to make a virgin Moscow Mule.
Here’s what you need to make a Moscow Mule mocktail.
  • Ginger Beer – Not ginger ale. Ginger ale is too sweet and won’t make it quite as refreshing.
  • Simple Syrup – You can skip adding the simple syrup if you don’t love sweet cocktails, but you are only using a small amount which helps to smooth out all the flavors and keep things balanced.
  • Fresh Lime – You have to use fresh. Bottled just won’t give it that same zing. And since this is where most of the flavor comes from for this drink, you want it to taste as good as possible.
  • Club Soda – Club soda adds fizz and helps to give the drink some body.
  • Fresh Mint – In a traditional Mule, fresh mint is used as a garnish. It’s great on this mocktail too. You can also muddle some fresh mint in the drink, if you prefer, to give it even more flavor.

1. Squeeze the fresh lime juice into the mug

This is my favorite citrus squeezer. Is it weird that I have one? I use it to make all my drinks and it’s wearing really well!

6. Stir

Use a bar spoon and give the drink a quick mix.

7. Garnish

Then garnish with fresh lime.

Hint: Clap the mint in between your palms to lightly bruise it and release the oils! It makes it smell amazing as you bring the mug full with this ginger beer mocktail to your lips.

Variations

You can take the classic flavors and make this drink your own. Here are a few ways you can add in new flavors without changing the overall profile of the drink.

  • Flavored Simple Syrups – use a flavored simple syrup to add in some more concentrated flavor. Just imagine how delish some strawberry simple syrup would be!
  • Flavored Soda Water – grab a flavored soda water (one without sugar!) to change up the flavors of this Moscow Mule Mocktail. You can find delicious combinations like Mango Strawberry that will add another layer of flavor.
  • Flavored Ginger Beer – Ginger beer comes in a variety of flavors that you can use in place of the traditional. From grapefruit to hibiscus, it’s a fun way to give this drink a twist.
  • Different Citrus – While I prefer to use fresh lime in my mocktails and cocktail, you can easily change up the citrus fruit you use (or use a combination) to change the flavors. Blood orange would be super yummy!
  • Kid Friendly – While this is a virgin cocktail recipe, your kids may not enjoy how bold the ginger beer is. If you want to make it more kid-friendly, you can use ginger ale. It’s sweeter (you may want to leave out the simple syrup) and has less of a kick from the ginger.
  • Make it Spicy – Make this non-alcoholic Moscow Mule spicy! Just muddle some fresh jalapeno (or serrano like I use in my Spicy Margarita) with the lime juice and simple syrup!

Equipment

This drink is made right in the cup so you don’t need any special equipment. However, serving it in a copper Moscow Mule mug is a great idea!

A copper mug is designed to keep drinks extra cool making them super refreshing and enhancing the overall experience. The handle keeps your hand from warming up the drink (and also from freezing your hand off – the technology works!).

So while no one is going to force you to use a copper mug, you should! They’re not only cool looking but keep your drink at the perfect temperature.

Top tips

  • Not all ginger beer is non-alcoholic, double check the label to ensure you aren’t turning this virgin mocktail into a full-on cocktail.
  • Don’t have simple syrup and don’t have time to make a full batch? Check out how to make Cheater Simple Syrup for one cocktail.
  • You can turn this into a punch by pre-squeezing the fresh lime juice. You can mix the simple syrup (if using) and lime juice and keep it in the fridge until ready to serve. Use the serving slider in the recipe card to change the number of servings you want to make. Don’t add the bubbles (club soda and ginger beer) until just before serving. Place ice in cups or mugs as needed so they don’t dilute the drink.

This refreshing Moscow Mule Mocktail is a fun drink to make for when you can’t enjoy the actual cocktail. While the ginger might be too much for your kids, it’s a great virgin recipe to make for baby showers and beyond!
