Why This Spiced Rum Cocktail Works

This spiced pear cocktail is a super-simple fall cocktail with just a few ingredients.

  • The warm notes of the nutmeg, ginger and spices in the spiced rum give this drink an instant holiday vibe.
  • The simple ingredients bring big flavor; no fancy liqueurs or syrups are needed.
  • If you’re a spiced rum fan, love rum cocktails or just love seasonal spices, the vanilla cinnamon notes pair really well with the pear flavor.
  • If you’re in California and the weather can be warm this time of year, this pear cocktail is refreshing but tastes like fall.
  • Fresh ginger gives this fall rum cocktail a nice little kick and elevates the drink slightly.
  • It’s perfect for fall happy hours and holiday parties, but it is refreshing enough to drink all year. (In warm weather, spiced rum can transport your taste buds to a place that feels tropical).

  • Spiced rum: I love the 1671 Spiced Rum from Captain Morgan. It was a special edition (which they sent me to try) but you can still find it in a variety of places. If you have a different brand of spiced rum, feel free to make that swap.
  • Pear juice: It’s not-too-sweet, seasonal and pairs well with spiced rum.
  • Fresh ginger: I like to grate in fresh ginger for a kick and boost in flavor.
  • Whole nutmeg: Nutmeg is quintessentially a fall flavor and really makes this spiced pear cocktail sing.

  • If you can’t find pear juice you can use pear nectar. I prefer to use the juice as it doesn’t have added sugar and is more refreshing in a cocktail (I don’t love sweet cocktails). Pear nectar has sugar added so you may need to some fresh lemon juice to balance the flavors.
  • If you don’t have fresh ginger or whole nutmeg you can use powdered (start with 1/8th tsp and taste). They will add a nice flavor to the drink but may not mix in all the way. Or try some pumpkin spice blend.

Variations

  • Can’t find pear juice? Try apple juice or white grape juice, you’ll get a similar fall cocktail you’ll really enjoy.
  • Don’t love spiced rum? Try it with Reposado or anejo tequila or bourbon. And even vodka would be delicious. And you can also try dark rum.
  • Make it a mocktail by leaving out the spiced rum and replacing it with ginger beer.
  • You can make your own spiced pear juice like I use in my Pear Bellinis.
  • Add a splash of ginger beer to add a little fizz and add another layer of ginger flavor.

Top tips

  • Edible flowers make great cocktail garnishes. Here I used marigolds, which I found at Whole Foods. (See more easy cocktail garnish ideas here).
  • It’s always good to have a little bit of liquid, in this case, the pear juice, in the shaker when you muddle so the oils that are released have somewhere to go.
  • If you want to make a batch of these cocktails, consider buying ginger juice. It will be much faster than having to muddle fresh ginger for multiple drinks. Just start with a little and add more if needed. Ginger is STRONG!
  • If using pear juice and you think it’s not sweet enough, you can add a little bit of simple syrup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this spiced pear cocktail ahead of time?

Yes, you can make this spiced pear cocktail ahead of time! Mix everything except the ice (and ginger beer if you’re adding bubbles) up to a day in advance. Keep it chilled, then shake or stir with ice right before serving.

What alcohol works best with pear?

Spiced rum is a classic alcohol to mix with pear—it gives warm vanilla and baking spice notes that pair perfectly with pear’s sweetness. But you can totally swap in vodka, bourbon, or tequila reposado, depending on your mood (or what you have in your home bar).

I don’t want to buy a whole bottle of spiced rum to try this cocktail, what can I do?

You can always pick up those airplane-sized bottles of spiced rum at BevMo and even your local grocery store if you don’t want to buy a full bottle. Or buy the bottle, then use it to make Rum Cake too.

Is pear juice hard to find?

You can find pear juice at just about any market. You can also look for pear nectar if you aren’t seeing pear juice. And don’t forget to look in the baby food section! You can sometimes find pear juice there.

  • Shake well.
  • Strain in to a cocktail glass filled with ice.

Notes

  • If you want to make a batch of these cocktails, consider buying ginger juice. It will be much faster than having to muddle fresh ginger for multiple drinks. Just start with a little and add more if needed. Ginger is STRONG!
  • In a pinch, you could use 1/4 tsp ground ginger in place of fresh ginger but you will lose that bite and heat that the fresh root brings. Taste and add more as needed.
  • If you don’t have spiced rum you can try tequila, bourbon, vodka or dark rum.
  • If you are looking for pear juice at the store, don’t forget to check the baby food aisle. If you can’t find any juice, look for pear nectar instead. You may need to add a little fresh lemon if the nectar is too sweet for you.
