I LOVE tequila. And while I love to make a simple margarita on the rocks, I love to try different flavor variations. It’s one of those cocktails that you can make completely new by swapping just one or two ingredients.

    Why This Recipe Works

I know some of you out there have bad memories of tequila (like, face down on the floor memories…) but you should give it another try. Because you’re going to love this easy watermelon margarita!

Using a small blender means that you can pulverize the watermelon and extract all that delicious flavor while taking care of any seeds that might be there. And when you toss in the other ingredients, everything gets blended up and ready to serve.

Adding blended fresh watermelon gives this drink a flavor boost that you will really enjoy. This is a great recipe to share with friends since it’s easy to make larger batches!

    Ingredient Notes

Labeled ingredients to make watermelon margarita with fresh fruit.

You don’t need fancy ingredients for a margarita. But freshness helps!

This recipe works best with fresh watermelon. But you can use watermelon juice instead if you can find it. If you use juice, you will need to taste it first since it probably already has some sweetness. You may not need the agave nectar.

Orange liqueur adds such a lovely flavor boost without punching you in the face with orange flavor. I used Triple Sec because that’s what I had, but you can use Cointreau instead.

Fresh lime is a must. Don’t use bottled. It’s just not the same.

Agave nectar is a great sweetener to use with tequila cocktails since it is also made from the agave plant. But you could use simple syrup if you prefer.

I use blanco tequila for most of my margaritas. You could use reposado instead if you prefer. My husband brought home Guy Fieri’s Santo tequila and it was really good. It’s super smooth and easy to drink is great in this watermelon margarita recipe.

How to Make a Fresh Watermelon Margarita

A plate with salt and a piece of lime with a cocktail glass next to it.

Start by rimming your cocktail glass with salt.

I don’t love to rim an entire glass. I typically only do a small portion. But I will say, there is something about salt with watermelon that just makes it taste even better!

Fresh watermelon chunks in a blender cup.

While this cocktail recipe doesn’t use a shaker, I do use a blender (like a Magic Bullet). I find that it is about the same amount of work as muddle the fresh watermelon.

Put fresh watermelon chunks in the cup of the small blender.

A small measuring cup with tequila next to a blended holding pieces of fresh watermelon.

Add the tequila and Triple Sec.

Yellow citrus squeezer with half a lime in it on the counter next to a cocktail shaker.

Add fresh lime juice and agave nectar to the blender. This is my favorite citrus squeezer. I’ve gone through several over the years and this one is holding up really well!

Blend everything together well, until there are no big chunks of the watermelon left.

Add fresh ice to the prepared glass with the salted rim. Then pour in the blended watermelon mixture.

A sprig of fresh mint is a great way to finish off what you are going to find is the best watermelon margarita recipe.

    Tips and Tricks

    • It’s easy to turn this into a Spicy Watermelon Margarita! Just muddle sliced jalapeno or serrano in the bottom of the glass before adding the rest of the ingredients.
    • You can make this into a Frozen Margarita by adding the ice to the blender and blending it all up together!
    • Salting the rim really enhances the flavor experience!
    • Because the flavor of fresh watermelon will change by the melon, you’ll need to taste and adjust the flavors for each drink.
    • Want to make this a little bit skinnier? You can leave out the agave nectar and it will still taste amazing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to strain the blended watermelon juice?

No. While the puree does have some texture to it, it’s perfectly easy to drink. Especially when it’s in a cocktail served over ice like this fresh watermelon margarita.

Can you make watermelon margaritas by the pitcher?

Yes! Making a pitcher of this recipe is easy. Just use a larger blender and change the number of servings on the recipe card below.

    Can you store leftovers?

Leftover flavored margaritas don’t store well. But you can store leftover watermelon juice in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
