This authentic Daiquiri made with rum is a classic cocktail so simple and delicious everyone should learn how to make one at home!

A rum cocktail recipe you’ll love

This simple Daiquiri recipe is similar to a Gimlet, but made with white rum instead of vodka or gin.

There are so many different variations out there but sometimes nothing beats the original Daiquiri cocktail. Seriously, this tastes so fancy you won’t believe how easy it was to make.

When I say daiquiri I know most of you think of a blended vacation drink but when served on the rocks it feels elevated and fresh.

I love to share these simple, classic drink recipes with you because they sometimes get overlooked. They are usually super quick and easy to make (and also delicious) and are great for building on with more flavors.

Get your fanciest glasses out because this daiquiri drink has become one of my go-to cocktails to mix up at the last minute when I still want to impress.

And, because all you need to make a rum daiquiri is, well, rum, as well as fresh limes and simple syrup it is great if you only have a small home bar.

Ingredients

All you need is 3 simple ingredients to make a Bacardi daiquiri.

Here’s what you need to make the best Daiquiri recipe:

White rum is the usual choice for a daiquiri but the recipe will work with dark rum (or gold rum) and spiced rum if that is all you have. As with any 3 ingredient drinks, the quality of your ingredients matters as you’ll really be able to taste them!

Variations

  • Hemingway Daiquiri – inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s favorite way to drink a daiquiri add maraschino liqueur, fresh grapefruit juice and remove the sugar syrup. Or leave the sugar in if you like sweet drinks.
  • Add bitters – I love that adding a few drops of bitters to any mixed drink adds something a little special.
  • Flavored syrups and liquors – as the addition of maraschino liquor adds cherry flavor to a Hemingway Daiquiri any flavored syrup or liquor that pairs well with lime can be added to your drink. Try a homemade blueberry simple syrup, basil simple syrup or my strawberry simple syrup.
  • Add some heat infuse your rum with slices of Habanero for a cocktail with a kick!
  • Flavored rum – You can easily add an extra tropical vibe by using Malibu coconut rum instead of regular rum. Or try grapefruit rum!

Top tips

  • For the perfect daiquiri, the colder the better. Juice your limes ahead and keep the juice in the fridge. You could even do what they do in fancy bars and keep your glasses in the freezer (make sure they are freezer-safe first!) or fill the empty glass with ice to chill it while you shake up your drink. Remove the ice before straining in the cocktail.
  • Turn this into a blended drink. Simply add everything to a blender with a handful of ice. Depending on how sweet you like it you might want to reduce the amount of simple syrup as the ice will dilute the sharpness of the lime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of rum?

White rum is the classic choice but any type of rum will work in a classic daiquiri. I’m a big fan of using what you already have on hand and not buying a bottle of something just to make one drink.

Do I need a cocktail shaker?

You need to shake the ingredients together with ice to get a properly diluted, not to-mention cold cocktail! But if you don’t own a cocktail shaker a jar with a well-fitting lid will work.

What is the different between a daiquiri and a margarita?

The biggest difference between a daiquiri and a margarita is the type of liquor used. A daiquiri uses rum while a margarita uses tequila. A margarita is sweetened by Triple Sec and a daiquiri is sweetened by simple syrup.
