Why you’ll love this margarita with wine

This White Wine Margarita recipe is absolutely delicious and one of my favorite wine cocktails. You can taste each flavor – the wine, the citrus and the tequila – in perfect harmony.

It is still clearly a margarita, but I think it feels a little more sophisticated is a great simple cocktail recipe for sipping at the end of a long day.

I know, it sounds a bit random but you’re not going to believe how good this Sauvignon Blanc Margarita is.

Sauvignon Blanc is a very citrusy white wine with fruity notes that would obviously go really well with lime. If you like sangria, you’ll love this easy Wine Margarita.

So what are you waiting for? Break out the cocktail shaker and your fave bottle of Sauvignon Blanc in time for happy hour!

What you need to make this wine margarita recipe:

Sauvignon Blanc is my favorite white wine for wine cocktails. I think the flavor works with so many different pairing options. But feel free to play around with white wines here, anything with citrus notes should work really well.

I would skip chardonnay. The oak notes can be very overpowering. But Pinot Grigio or Riesling would both work. Choose something you like the flavor of.

Tequila Blanco is best to pair with the white wine. But if you only have reposado you can use that instead.

I’ve used store-bought simple syrup here as it is what I have to hand, but don’t forget how easy it is to make your own! If you want to make this a little more like a traditional margarita, you can leave out the simple and try to sweeten it with a little Cointreau orange liqueur.

Fresh lime is essential to a classic margarita recipe. But fresh grapefruit is also essential. You can use store-bought grapefruit if you can’t find fresh.

Variations

  • Use sparkling wine – for a little extra fizz, switch out the white wine for sparkling white wine. But, whatever you do don’t add it to the cocktail shaker! Simply top off the shaken margarita and give it a gentle stir.
  • Make a Devil’s Margarita – do the same as you would for the sparkling wine margarita above, but float red wine on top of the mixed cocktail just before serving. To stop the wine from mixing into the drink, gradually add it by pouring it over a bar spoon held just above the surface of the drink.
  • Swap out the tequila – it won’t *quite* be a wine margarita anymore but using vodka instead of tequila will still make a delicious drink. (See my Vodka Margarita Recipe).
