What is a Blackberry Mojito

A Blackberry Mojito is the kind of cocktail that feels impressive but takes almost no brainpower โ€” my favorite combo. Nothing beats a classic mojito. Except perhaps a classic mojito with a fruity blackberry twist!

  • Fast and foolproof. You can muddle, pour, and sip in under 5 minutes.
  • Minimal ingredients. Just rum, blackberries, mint, lime, sugar, and soda.
  • Looks fancy without trying. That deep purple color? Instant โ€œwowโ€ factor.
  • Totally flexible. Make it by the glass, as a mocktail, or in a big pitcher for a crowd.
  • Naturally refreshing. Sweet, tart, minty, and bubbly.
  • Perfect for any occasion. One of my favorite cocktail recipes for a quiet night in or a low-effort get-together with friends.

Muddling fresh berries into this mojito gives it both a subtle berry flavor and a pretty pink color (though I’ve included tips below for amping up the blackberry flavor, which will also make a darker drink!)

I mean, name a better flavor combination than blackberries and mint? A blackberry mojito is a great summer cocktail, holiday drink idea or freshing, fruity beverage any time you want one.

  • White rum: White rum is the traditional type of rum to use in a mojito.
  • Club soda: Club soda or sparkling water can be used in this recipe.
  • Fresh lime wedges
  • Fresh mint leaves
  • Fresh Blackberries
  • White granulated sugar

  • No fresh blackberries? Use frozen โ€” just thaw them first in a glass or bowl so you can capture the juice that melts also.
  • Change the liquor: I’ve made mojitos with tequila and vodka and they are still delicious! Feel free to change up the liquor if you like a different one better. Spiced rum would also be a great substitution.
  • Simple syrup: While white sugar is super traditional when making a mojito recipe, you can use simple syrup if you prefer.
  • Amp up the berry flavor – Muddling fresh fruit often keeps the flavors pretty subtle. Substitute the sugar in this recipe for my homemade blackberry simple syrup.
  • Fresh limes are a must! DO NOT substitute fresh lime juice for bottled. Squeezed lime juice and muddled lime juice are KEY!

Variations

  • Raspberry mojito – sub the blackberries for equal amounts of fresh raspberries. Or use another type of berry or fruit.
  • Make it fancy – top the mojito with blackberries with champagne or prosecco instead of club soda.
  • Make it extra boozy – Add a shot of Chambord liqueur for an extra flavor boost.
  • Big-batch pitcher – Double or triple the recipe, muddle everything but the soda ahead of time, and top with bubbles right before serving. Blackberry mojitos are great as a make-ahead cocktail.
  • Make it a mocktail – Leave out the rum and use more club soda. You’ll still get a super-refreshing, flavorful drink.

Tips

  • If you want to make this classic cocktail a bit more traditionally you can use 3-4 lime wedges instead of lime juice. Just add them to the glass with the mint and sugar and muddle them well.
  • Don’t have a legit cocktail muddler? Use the the handle of a wooden spoon!
  • If this mojito with blackberry is too sweet, add a little more fresh lime juice to balance it out.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t have white rum, can I use spiced in this blackberry mint mojito?

Yes you can use spiced rum. It will take away from the fresh lime juice and mint but it will still taste amazing. You can also use tequila or vodka.

What sort of glass should I serve this mojito in?

Mojitos are best served in highball glasses but in a pinch I’ve served mojitos in big gin and tonic glasses which is super pretty, just be sure to include a paper or metal straw!

Can I make Blackberry Mojitos ahead of time?

Yes you can make Blackberry Mojitos ahead of time. Muddle the blackberries, mint, sugar and lime juice a few hours ahead. Keep it chilled and add rum and club soda when ready to serve. Make sure you get some of the lime wedges and mint in the cocktail glass if making ahead in a different vessel.

Can I use frozen blackberries instead of fresh?

Totally. They work great! Just let them thaw a little before muddling or use them straight from the freezer for an extra-cold drink. The flavorโ€™s the same โ€” maybe even better if the berries were frozen at peak ripeness.
