Red Wine Smoothie Recipe

smoothie with red wine and yogurt

I’ll be honest. At first, the idea of a red wine smoothie was a novelty. Inspired by The Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix, I thought I’d make this funny post.

Turns out THIS WINE SMOOTHIE IS DELICIOUS! For serious. With frozen berries, a fruity red wine and some yogurt, this fun cocktail idea is refreshing and takes just a few minutes to make.

I love wine cocktails and this blended beverage is perfect for the warm weather of spring and summer!

A red wine smoothie is delicious

Have you seen The Santa Clarita diet yet?? It’s an original Netflix show starring Drew Barrymore and my boo, Timothy Olyphant.

It’s gory and funny and full of heart. Which is kind of weird mix. The premise of the show is that Drew’s character comes down with a virus that basically makes her a zombie.

And so, to eat, she must eat humans. Gross, right. But so super funny at the same time! This show is not for everybody.

I tried to get my mom to watch it and she called and said, “I was fine. Until she ate that guy’s fingers…” It’s so clever and well written and the acting is fantastic.

There is lots of blood, etc. but I feel like it’s so over the top that it takes away a little of the gross factor. But I might just be desensitized after watching 3 seasons of American Horror Story…

In one of the episodes, Drew is out speed walking with the neighbors and carrying a meat (human) smoothie. They have no idea about her secret and no idea that she is, in fact, consuming a person, during their walk and chat.

It looked like a regular berry smoothie and made me come up with my own smoothie (with a secret) recipe.

Red wine smoothie ingredients

A smoothie made with red wine is so tasty!

How to make a wine smoothie

Since I have no plans to blend up a neighbor, the wine smoothie was born.

For this adult smoothie, you just need a few ingredients and a few minutes. Just remember not to drink it too quickly. You’ll definitely get brain freeze.

Ingredients

  • fruity red wine
  • yogurt
  • frozen berries
  • honey

A small amount of greek yogurt helps to tone down the bite from the wine and berries and the small amount of honey brings out the fruit flavors in a nice, mellow way.

Use red wine to make an adult smoothie

Instructions

Open up that bottle of wine.

How to make a red wine smoothie

Add it to your blender or individual-sized smoothie cup. I love my Ninja blender for getting the frozen fruit pureed really well. Plus it’s great if you want to make just one or a bunch!

Mixed frozen berries and red wine make a delicious smoothie

Add your frozen mixed berries. Berry flavor blends really nicely with red wine.

Greek yogurt makes this red wine smoothie a little more creamy

Add a little Greek yogurt…I’m learning to love it…

It’s usually too tangy for me to eat straight. I usually eat it as a Chocolate Yogurt Dip with fruit or as a Yogurt Dip for apples. But in this recipe, it gives it a really creamy feel and cuts the acidity of the wine.

Use honey to naturally sweeten your smoothie

Just a wee bit of honey is all you need. I don’t like sweet drinks so if you need more, just add it.

Blended red wine smoothie

Blend that red wine smoothie aaaalllllllll the way up.

Pour into your favorite on-the-go smoothie cup. Your friends will NEVER know about your delicious little secret ingredient. (Just make sure your kids know about it so they won’t sample it.)

This red wine smoothie is so easy to make. It’s full of healthy fruit and protein-filled greek yogurt. And yes, a little wine.

I was not expecting much out of this smoothie. BUT IT IS DELICIOUS! I’m not even a huge red wine fan.

The berries and just a touch of sweetness from the honey were insanely good. I’m not suggesting you make one of these every day, but there are days, like Mondays, when a red wine smoothie would really help you out.

This smoothie with red wine is the perfect thing for your next girl’s getaway. I feel like it’s the perfect pre or post-hike beverage (if that’s the kind of thing you do on a girl’s trip. I prefer to sleep).

Or sip one while you watch The Santa Clarita Diet! I love throwing binge-watching parties, don’t you?

Top tips

Maybe you don’t want wine in your smoothie. That’s ok. Just leave it out. If the smoothie is too thick, add a little apple juice or even plain water.

If you’re not sure how to tell if a wine is fruity, just ask someone at a wine store for a suggestion. Don’t let them sell you something crazy expensive. Or just use what you have, the flavor will not change all that much. And use less if you don’t want the wine flavor to really come through.
