I think I have to call this the summer of sugar. Because my kids were all about it. School starts this week and we’ll be getting back in to a better routine of eating things that are green and come from the ground. But as a last little summer celebration, we made grasshopper milkshakes. There’s a little bit of green in those, right? We were inspired to make them after watching a new original Netflix series called Beat Bugs. As a family of music lovers, we think this show is pretty awesome. The show uses 50 songs from the Lennon/McCartney ‘Northern Songs’ catalog to tell uplifting stories filled with melody. The cute bug characters explore and learn in an overgrown suburban backyard and each have a distinctive personality. So we decided to turn one of our favorite pies in to a milkshake and share the recipe with you!
*This post is created in partnership with the Netflix #StreamTeam. Every month I share what my family is watching on Netflix because we love it and are addicted. Hot on the heels of making this fig and ice cream dessert recipe, we started with one of my favorite ice cream brands as the base of the shake. This Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream is DELICIOUS and makes this recipe very easy. Then we put a spin on the traditional cookies and cream flavor by using mint flavored OREO thins. OMG. I’d never had a thin OREO before and they are amazing. Like, hide from the children so you don’t have to share, amazing.
I had my 10-year-old make the shakes for us. He added the ice cream and milk to the Ninja… You guys, 10 year olds are awesome. He can reach the cabinets, now, to put clean dishes away from the dishwasher. He can accompany his little bro to the bathroom when we are out and about. The future is bright!!! Then we broke up the cookies a little to help them blend well. With the Ninja we didn’t really need to do that. It pulverizes like a beast. We were left with this Beat Bugs inspired Grasshopper Milkshake recipe to drink before family band practice. And by family band practice I mean 5 long minutes of very loud, out of sync tambourine and harmonica playing…I much prefer the quieter rendition of ‘Hot Line Bling’ my son played along with in the car in the video below… Those instruments might go missing or regifted to another family…
My kids asked for a YouTube channel and they are slowly creating content for it. They LOVE when Netflix sends special packages!
Don’t forget to check out the Beat Bugs and sip on a Grasshopper Milkshake. Gummy worm garnish is totally optional.
