Muddled Ginger Strawberry Sparkling Water

RecipeWhelp, its hump day again.  Arrowhead® Brand Sparkling Mountain Spring Water wants you to make a “Feel Good Moment” for yourself today and every Wednesday.  Last week I talked about how much I love sparkling water.  Today I thought I would share one of my favorite ways to drink it.  This muddled ginger and strawberry drink recipe is SO tasty!  My friend Danae mentioned she was drinking this one day on her instagram and I immediately had to try it.  I LOVE fresh ginger but had never thought to add to a drink.

ginger-strawberry-lime-and-mintI very rarely use fresh ginger.  But for some reason I always have some in my freezer.  Ever since I made a syrup with it for homemade ginger ale for my son’s birthday party I have kept it on hand.  The smell always gives me a quick pick me up.  I’m very picky about the freshness of my fruit, but I hate to waste it.  This is a great recipe for strawberries that are looking a little sad.

peel-ginger-with-a-spoonDo you know the trick of using a spoon to peel the ginger?  So easy and quick.

fresh ginger in glassMake this recipe to your taste.  Slice up some fresh ginger and add to your glass.

limesAdd as much lime as you like.  I add 3 of these cut up pieces.

add-fruit-to-glassRoughly cut your strawberries and add them to the limes and ginger.

muddle-fruit-in-glassThen muddle your little heart out.  I’m sure there are rules for not being too rough with your fruit but I just wanted to make sure that I was able to get the limes to release their oils and juice and make a dent in the ginger to release its flavor.  The strawberries get pretty squashed.

Arrowhead Sparkling WaterAdd ice to your glass and top with Arrowhead® Brand Sparkling Mountain Spring Water.  Place a sprig of mint in the palm of your hand.  Clap your hands together a time or two to get the mint to release its fragrance.  Add the mint and a straw to your glass and enjoy.

lime-ginger-strawberry-sparkling-waterThis is super refreshing and delicious.  The fresh ginger gives it a little kick and the fresh lime and strawberry just work so well with it.  You will get pieces of fruit stuck in your straw.  If you give it a little mix with the straw you can see from the shot above that the larger pieces can get stuck up on top of the ice and make it less likely to stop up your straw.

ginger-lime-strawberry-waterOr skip the straw altogether and guzzle the crap out of the this.  It’s that good.  The fresh ginger really makes this special.  Are you a fan of fresh ginger?

August Loves

This month I couldn’t get enough of…

cotton-candy-flavored-grapesCotton Candy Grapes : :  I found out about these from my friend Pattie Cordova.  They sell them at Sprouts markets and of course I had to try them.  They really DO taste like cotton candy.  It is so odd!  And delicious.

Foam-magazineFoam magazine ::  I’m kind of obsessed.  I always hesitated picking it up at my local bookstore because I’m not a surfer and I didn’t want to be a poser.  I thought it was for awesome surfer chicks.  And it is.  But it’s for everyone else too.  Fashion, ocean, art, music.  I have been reading it the past few months and LOVE it.  It took me everything I had to save the music issue to read until I was on vacation.

ginger-beerYou may remember I mentioned my love of Moscow Mules but for the times when I shouldn’t be imbibing, I just drink the Ginger Beer.  I have had to limit myself to one a day.  Reed’s is my favorite brand (flavor varies depending on the brand you buy) with a crisp, refreshing ginger flavor.  I add about an ounce of fresh lime juice and ice and sip away.

pottery-barn-mirrorI finally got my husband to hang my Willams-Sonoma Channing mirror up in our bedroom.  I LOVE it.  And my husband got excited when he saw Jeff Lewis use the same mirror (or one VERY similar) in an episode of Interior Therapy.

sun-bum-suncreenI took this Sun Bum sunscreen with me on vacation.  Remember my previous post about sunscreen?  Well, the one thing that I had missing was the smell of a tropical scent in my skin protection.  It may seem crazy, but it really mattered to me.  When I found out that Sun Bum smells amazing AND comes in a 50 plus SPF I just had to try it.  And I’m a fan.  The can says it is hypoallergenic and is anti-aging.  Sold.  While summer might be coming to a close, don’t forget that you need to be wearing sunscreen all day, every day.

nixon-blaster-speakerThis Nixon speaker totally made our vacation to Cabo.  My husband and I love music and new we wanted to take a speaker with us.  What is so awesome about this one is that it was designed to withstand the elements, like sand, and is shock and water-resistant.  I came in to our family room to find my husband egging my son on to throw it on the floor!  And so he did.  Several times.  We had it with us on the beach every single day and never worried about where we set it.  The sound is also crazy good, which is well, good for a speaker.  One of my favorite parts is the voice.  Todd Richards, a pro snowboarder, lends his voice for  several phrases that come out of the speaker.  He will tell you when you are about halfway through the battery life (about 12 hours!) and when you turn it off he says, “See you later.”  This speaker is smart AND polite.

mushrooms-and-brussels-sproutsI have always disliked mushrooms.  But all the sudden, my 7-year-old decided that he liked them and has been asking me to make them for him.  So I did and now I love them.  We have them about twice a week.  I keep it simple using Trader Joe’s pre-chopped onion, shallot and garlic sautéed in a little olive oil.  Then I add the mushrooms and whatever other veggie we think we need and over the pan.  We let the veggies cook down a bit and then take the lid off and let the moisture evaporate.  Takes about 15 minutes and then we eat our faces off.  Mushrooms are super high in Vitamin D so at least I know we are getting some sort of health benefit.  But I have promised him every 3rd time that I will cook them with bacon.  It’s all about compromise.

*Disclosure:  This is not a sponsored post.  These are just things I love.  Pottery Barn (a sister company to Williams Sonoma) sometimes sends me products at my request.  The Channing mirror is one such item.  All opinions are mine.

An easy way to enjoy fresh fruit from Dole

Dole is rocking my world right now.  You may have read my post from yesterday about their new Shakers product.  I’m obsessed.  But they also sent me these fresh frozen fruit cups to try out too!  I made a pre-dinner smoothie for them to work in a serving of fruit and it couldn’t have been easier.

The Dole frozen fruit single serving cups come in a two pack and are kept frozen.  With detailed thawing instructions on the back for optimal enjoyment, Dole has made it even easier to have a healthy alternative, fast and ready to go.

You simply remove the plastic lid and use however you want to!

My kids were so into these!  We decided to make them in to a quick smoothie before dinner (but I figured this would be their usual fruit serving they would usually have at dinner so it wasn’t like I was giving them a treat right before dinner – I’m saying this mostly for my mom’s benefit in case she reads this.  She would be appalled that I gave the kids something right before dinner.  The horror!)

One son doesn’t like pineapple so I kept it out of the initial smoothie.  I added a Dole strawberry cup and a blueberry cup to some ice and about a cup of orange juice.

So fast and easy.  Once I poured a glass for my pineapple hating son, I added the Dole pineapple cup to the blender and mixed that in for my pineapple tolerant son.  I felt good about their “snack” and there was no hassle at all.  These would be great for school lunches where you could put them in the lunchbox frozen.  They would be great to take with you for a healthy snack on the go and there are tons more ways that they can be used!  Dole is giving us all kinds of healthy options for summer.  My favorite part about these is that they aren’t packed in syrup or any added sweeteners.  Just fruit.

Dole has been touring around the country sharing samples of their two fabulous new products as well as bringing awareness to childhood obesity and nutrition and helping local Boys and Girls Clubs.  If you are in the Los Angeles area, head to The Grove next Saturday to learn how your family can find healthier food options this summer as well as finding activities to do together.  See all the info on their Facebook page (click the photo that says Shake it Up).

Dole Shakers – The easiest smoothie ever!

Oh my gosh, Dole Shakers are my new favorite thing!   How delicious does this strawberry banana smoothie look?!  I think this just revolutionized the way I have breakfast.  For real, yo.

Do you know about these Dole Shakers yogurt and fruit smoothie kit?  Sold in the freezer section of your local store, this has to be the best idea ever invented.  Especially for those of us worried about swimsuit season and, well, just not pumping our kids full of chemicals and empty calories.

When you first open it, you will see these frozen yogurt balls and fruit pieces.  Looking at it, it is hard to believe that this will turn in to a nice, thick smoothie.  But it will!

The super simple directions are on the back of the container and you just add juice.  That’s it!  The lazy person inside of me is rejoicing!  Especially since I often (always) turn to convenience foods in the morning because I “just don’t have time!” to make something more healthy.  This is even easier to make than a pop tart.  A quick shake and you are ready to drink up.

And while I don’t run off to work in the morning, I am up and about shuttling the kids to school or running errands.  And as most of you moms know, sometimes you have a very small window to get something done and you don’t want to have to stop and eat and waste those precious seconds.  This is shaped perfectly for a cup holder.  All you would do is take the Dole Shakers smoothie cup out of the freezer, give it a quick shake to break up those frozen pieces and pour in your juice.  Then just take it with you and run out the door.  To mix, all you do is shake the container for 30-45 seconds.

My kids adore smoothies.  I reluctantly shared my smoothie with my boys.  My 3 year old drank the whole thing (which is unusual – like his mother, he also prefers carbs to anything else) and my 6 year old told me it was the best smoothie he has ever had!  And I love knowing that when I get that craving for something sweet in the afternoon, these are there to save me from snacking on something terrible for me.

The Dole Shakers don’t take up much room in the freezer.  And I will be keeping them stocked.  This door compartment is now the designated Dole Shakers space.  I saw another blog post that noted they were about $1.50 each at Wal-Mart.  But if you head to the Dole Shakers page, you can download a coupon.

I gave my husband the mixed berry Dole Shakers to try.  There were going to be pictures but he was still in his underwear.  The mixed berry flavor was also very tasty!  He loves to have a smoothie on the weekends and will make them for us in the blender.  But he never makes them on a weekday because it just takes too much time.  I love that he will be able to take one of these with him now.

And because I am a crazy craft hoarder, I also think the  container is going to prove very useful for things…Have you tried the Dole Shakers yet?  Tell me what you think!

*Dole gave me the products to review.  All opinions are mine.  And I love this product.
