They are my total weakness. If I don’t have time for a meal during the day, I turn to convenience foods to get me through. Or if I’m running late, I’ll grab a whole bag of chips to take in the car with me. Pretty soon, I’m at my destination, covered in crumbs with an empty bag in my lap. It’s not a good look. And I feel bad about it. I do the best with staying on a healthy path if I put a little forethought in to it. But it has to be easy. Once in a while I might prep veggies to grab for on-the-go, but I always get bored with that and then fall back in to old habits. I think I finally some smart snacking systems in place. Today I’m sharing my smart snacking tips with you so you can feel good about your choices too. Now step away from the cheese puffs…
For me, I find that if I snack while I’m multi-tasking, I get carried away, which is a nice way of saying I’ll pig eff out. As I’m always looking for ways to add in a little me-time in to the day, I make sure that snack time is not at my desk. This break might be short (or long depending on if I’m having a cup of coffee or just eating a piece of fruit) but it allows me to fully experience what I’m eating. I think that when you acknowledge the food you are eating, you appreciate it, you eat it more slowly and you don’t need the volume to feel sated. When you are shoveling food in without thinking about it, it’s very empty and you eat more without even realizing.Portion Control
I’m really bad about paying attention to portion control and nutrition information on the side of packages. If I take a bag of snacks to the couch, all bets are off. But if I take the extra second and portion out my snack in to a bowl, I’m going to stick with that amount. I never go back for seconds. Water is great for keeping your body hydrated (your skin and hair look best when hydrated) but it is also helpful when trying to stay on a healthy eating plan. Water not only aids in digestion (which is a big part of feeling healthy), but it also can help you to feel full. When I was younger and would show up to a party where the food looked questionable (mayonnaise based salads sitting out for hours, unidentifiable cuts of meat…) I would always grab a soda so that I could fill up and not be starving. But I realize now that soda is not the answer. Water will help you to not feel like you are starving also plus it doesn’t have the calories of soda. One summer I ate super clean, for a month straight, to prepare for a vacation. I felt good. But I was also miserable. I wasn’t rewarding myself for my good behavior and I wasn’t loving life. Sure I looked ok in my bikini but life was a drag. Now when I’m on a really clean streak, I allow myself some fun. Indulge in the Right Sweets
I have the biggest sweet tooth known to man. So I’m always in search of healthy options for a little treat. Having a piece of chocolate is not going to derail all your hard work. These Skinnygirl chocolates are SO GOOD. They are packed in 100 calorie packs so you know you aren’t going overboard (but trust me you will want to eat the whole bag at once because of how delicious they are). These Belgian milk chocolate truffles use natural ingredients and have no trans fats. Boom. You guys. The Sea Salt Toffee Truffles…mind blowingly good. There is no diet flavor in these candies at all. My kids asked to try them and I felt like a jerk for telling them that they were diet candy and I needed them all to myself. But I got over that really quickly.
But let’s talk about the Skinnygirl coffee for a second. It’s my fave. The Americano roast doesn’t have any sweeteners or anything, but it is full of flavor and is a nice dark roast. I really enjoy having a cup to start my day. And while I usually try to have lots of protein for breakfast, sometimes I have to start my day with some chocolate. That’s just how I roll. If I could suggest only 2 products from all that I tried, I would say grab the coffee and candy! Then invite your gal pals over for a coffee date.
Hidden Snacking Dangers
Be aware that all products are not created equal! Some of those little mints that you pop to get fresh breath are adding calories that you probably aren’t even thinking about. These Skinnygirl mints are 0 calories. While I don’t suggest eating the whole tin at once, it’s nice to know that you don’t even have to think about them as you toss them in your purse to bring on errands with you. Do a little research at the get go to make sure that your snacking choices really are putting you on the right track. We’ve all heard that almonds are full of good fats but if you eat 1 cup of them (which I know I can do…) it’s basically the caloric equivalent of eating 3 candy bars…Not good. Skinnygirl products are created with super high standards for quality, nutritional content and taste. But it’s still up to you to not over due it.
Take it With You
Make sure that you have items on hand that are easy to take on the go with you. As I mentioned above, it’s too easy to grab a bag of chips to eat in the car. Look for items that are prepackaged for you so there is no thinking involved. I love to keep light cheese sticks on hand that are a great source of protein and super easy to eat in the car. Sometimes I’ll pair them with a piece of fruit so I get a little bit of sweet, but I always try to work protein in to my snacks too. If I think I may be tempted to stop for a coffee drink or something that is sure to be full of calories, I’ll bring along a Skinnygirl Sparkler. It’s a flavored sparkling water beverage. The bottle is 2 servings, but if I am going to be gone for a long time I don’t think twice about the serving size. Plus at only 5 calories per serving, that’s a whopping 10 calories that I’m indulging in as opposed to some crazy sugary coffee drink.
When I set myself up for smart snacking success I feel really good about my choices. It doesn’t feel like extra work and I know that I am making a positive change in my busy mom lifestyle. With the Skinnygirl products, I never feel guilty. I know that they are going to taste good, which also means that I’m going to feel like I’m rewarding myself. They have taken all the guess-work out of smart snacking.
