Create a morning ritual
There are a few things that I really enjoy doing in the morning. They aren’t productive, they are purely for my happiness. And I think that’s why they mean so much. I look forward to my morning cup of coffee, and I love to sip it while browsing on my iPad. I’m usually checking out Instagram, but I also love to check out Pinterest and maybe play some solitaire. I work from home and have office hours, so starting the day off this way lets me ease into the day without jumping right into work. Don’t get me wrong, this is a relatively short amount of time, but the days where I have to skip my routine feel hectic to me.
I think no matter how you choose to start your day, you should definitely make time for yourself. Meditation, watching the Today Show, reading a book, listening to a podcast, whatever your heart guides you to, do it! You may even need to get up 15 minutes earlier to make it work. In my opinion, starting the day off right means that you are intentional with your time and your state of mind. Put yourself first so you will be at your best to help everyone else as the day goes on.
I am a breakfast person. I can’t function when I am hungry, so I need a good breakfast to start the day off right. I also don’t want to put in too much effort to make an elaborate meal. Having a stressless (if we’re being honest, it’s never going to be stress-free) morning takes a little bit of preparation. I encourage the kids to make sure that their backpacks are packed up the night before, and that they have everything they’ll need for the next day by the front door: their homework, music instruments, etc. I also have them pack their lunches the night before. By this time in the school year, we pretty much have lunch packing down to a formula, but packing them in the morning is so stressful! When the kids pack lunches the night before, they simply grab an ice pack and put their lunch in their backpack. This makes their morning routine for school less stressful, too. This may take some work and, of course, works best with older children. It will also take a little bit of work on your part. Having the kids take ownership of themselves and their day is a huge weight lifted off mom. The job will never be completely turned over to the kids. They are kids after all. Because we make sure that they are prepared for school the night before, there are fewer things for them to worry about in the morning. Our routine has them get dressed right when they get up (or after a shower if they need one), and only then can they come sit on the couch and watch a show. They know exactly what time they are expected to turn the TV off and make sure they brush their teeth, put shoes on, etc. We have a mental checklist that we run through to make sure they are ready, and then I just have to keep an eye on the clock and give reminders. It has really cut down on nagging!
With them taking over their morning, I get to enjoy my coffee and my own morning ritual, and I really enjoy drinking my coffee!
