Have you guys seen Moroccan Wedding Blankets? They are SO gorgeous! They're usually full of texture and sometimes they even have a little bit of sparkle thrown in. They look so chic on a bed and look equally as amazing on a wall as art. But I have trouble laying down that kind of money on, well, just about anything (except shoes!). I have this empty wall that was just crying for something special. I set out to find something that was similar to a woven wall hanging that would create some drama. I couldn't find anything in my price range so I decided to make something and I wanted to share just how simple it was! This DIY Wall Hanging is a little bit boho, a little bit girly and a whole lot of easy!
Fabric stores are an awesome place to wander when you are looking for creative inspiration. And of course it had just what I was looking for with this fringed fabric! This fabric had the feel I wanted and I didn't even need to embellish it, although I could have with various trims. To hang the fabric, I used some decorative wooden sticks that I picked up at Ikea a while ago. I liked the pop of color at the top but you can use almost anything. A wooden dowel from the craft store, painted or unpainted would do the trick. And if you are a super hippie, a branch from outside would work too. You really only need the string if you need to bundle several smaller rods together. These are pretty flimsy so I knew I'd need a few of them to hold the weight of the fabric.
Cut your fabric to the width you want it for your wall. Next you'll make a little hem at the top for the wooden rods to fit in.
I have this odd quirk where I like to use things a few different ways before I let it live somewhere permanently, so I didn't want to sew the fabric. Instead I used simple straight pins to secure it around the rods. Feel free to do a simple hand stitch, with matching thread, if you want yours to be a little more secure. I see now that if I did sew it, and want to use it somewhere else later, I could have cut the fabric right under the hem and only lost a few inches. Live and learn…
Here's a tip for people who like to decorate their walls but then move things around and try them in new locations. Straight pins are a great way to hang stuff without leaving big holes in your wall! They aren't super strong, so they won't be able to support the weight of a picture frame with glass, but they work great for a party when you want to hang a garland or other light decorations. Tap lightly with a hammer to get it in to place and note that they do bend pretty easily so when I say lightly, I mean lightly. I used one straight pin at each end of my DIY wall hanging and it held it no problem. It transformed a really blank boring space and gave it some drama. This area is right off my kitchen and the DIY Wall Hanging really finished the space. Now I like to be in this room! This would be perfect for a bedroom or little girls room, don't you think?
