My Bedroom Makeover & Bedroom Decorating Ideas
My bed is truly my happy place. The rest of the room, however, was SO boring and dull! And since not many people, who enter your home, ever see this room, it’s often one that gets ignored. I finally decided that I needed to do a little makeover in the room to make it more inspiring and fit my personal style. I’m sharing the bedroom decorating ideas that I used to overcome some challenges in putting this room together and giving it a little more character.
Make Your Furniture Useful
A bedroom is a really hard room to design in terms of furniture placement. Often there are closet doors, bathroom doors, and sliding doors to contend with. And all of that is true in my room. Although our space is decent sized, there are really only a few spaces that furniture can fit due to wall size or room layout.
Could this room be designed more aesthetically pleasing? Probably. But I am a firm believer in function as well. I need to keep a desk space in my room since this is the only place in the house for it. Luckily this desk is really nice to look at and I don’t mind that it is my focal point from my bed sanctuary.
I’m not kidding. I LOVE to be in bed watching TV. I know that a lot of designers will tell you to remove the TV or hide it. No chance. You’ve just got to make your room work for you and the design will never be wrong.
I’m not going to share any before pictures because they are TERRIBLE! Just imagine a space with nothing on the walls, no color, mismatched bedding, unstyled piles of papers and books, etc. I think I just saw you shudder. It was pretty much a blank space to work with which made it so much fun!
Add A New Headboard
One of the things that made all the difference in my room was my new headboard! I had been wanting one forever but couldn’t make up my mind about what style I wanted. In the end, I went with this headboard from Sauder, with a little bit of a traditional shape.
I wanted to make sure that it stood out from the neutral wall behind the bed so I added this colorful tapestry. Am I the only crazy one that doesn’t want to hang a heavy picture above the bed? Blame it on the California earthquakes, I guess.
The tapestry also brought in a little of the boho vibe I love. The colors work really well with the new rug I put under the bed. Another game-changer for me. I never knew a rug could make me so happy! I had spent YEARS refusing a dust ruffle, but it was key in warming up the room and giving it a more finished look. Touche, dust ruffle.
Decorate the Nightstands
While I kept the nightstands symmetrical with matching lamps, I styled each one differently. For my side of the bed, I have a small jewelry box for when I take off my accessories at night and really great, unique picture frames for family photos.
For my husband’s side of the bed, I made sure to incorporate things that appeal to his sense of style as well. I grabbed some of his coffee table books from the bookshelf and added a small tray to the top to hold the items he uses every day, like sunglasses, his favorite pocket knife, and notebook he keeps with him for when inspiration strikes.
I also used a small framed photo he gave me as a gift one year to make his side of the bed a little more masculine. I styled this when he was out-of-town on a trip and luckily he loved it when he got back. Phew.
Incorporate Unique Furniture Pieces
One of the other things I did was to think outside of the box on how to use pieces, like this bar cart. You wouldn’t traditionally see this in your master bedroom. Instead of using it for its original purpose in the front part of the house, I decided to use it to organize my jewelry and accessories instead.
Use Things From Around the House
To style the room, I used items that we already had. By moving things around, from room to room, you get to refresh your look without spending tons of money. I used serving trays that I had in the kitchen to layer on the bar cart and help organize my perfumes and baubles. And bringing in fresh flowers really MADE the whole room! I’m curious to see if I can keep that up. I HATE (or don’t remember) to change flower water.
Bedroom Furniture Can Be Affordable
I’m so excited that there are so many options available now for affordable furniture, like this desk. This is my view from bed so having a nice looking piece of furniture is ideal. While we kept my husband’s vintage dresser, for practical and sentimental reasons, looks right at home sitting next to it. Luckily my love of boho means that mixing and matching work really well for creating an eclectic look. You don’t need to buy a matching set in order to have your finished room look great.
Create a Temporary Gallery Wall
One of the hardest parts of home decorating, for me, is putting things up on the walls. It seems so final and permanent! Instead, I created a more temporary gallery wall so that I can change out the art and photos as I see fit. One of my favorite things to do is use my kid’s art and enlarge it for one-of-a-kind wall art. That heart, above the TV, was done by my youngest son! How fun is that! A gallery wall is a great way to infuse your personality into your space.
The Perfect Height Desk for Standing
I didn’t know it when browsing the desks on the Sauder site, but this desk is the perfect height! I don’t work at the desk in my bedroom but use it for printing, scanning etc. This is the perfect height for using while standing. It eliminated the need for a chair, which would have been tight in that space anyway. It’s like this desk was made for this room.
Bedroom Decorating Ideas Should Reflect You
I thought my bed made me happy before now you have to pretty much pry me out of this room. I find that I’m working more from my bed, I’m relaxing and reading in here and I’m much more energized when just being in this space that truly shows a style that I love. I’m all about easy, affordable style that fits you and your family and I think my bedroom makeover is the perfect example of that.
Sauder invited me to share my makeover with them for the Sauder Put Together LookBook. This is a great place to come to see how others are styling their Sauder furniture pieces! You may even see a few of my ideas on home decor style.
