A few summers ago I decided to try to look a little better in my bathing suit and pay more attention to my overall health. That meant that what I was eating was the primary focus of every minute of my day. It felt like a full time job just to make sure I had healthy options around that were prepped and ready for when I was hungry. The results were awesome. But I couldn’t sustain that level of attention on my diet. I’m still on a quest to live a more healthy lifestyle but I’m choosing to not let it take over my life. I’m guessing you also don’t want to give up your life and only pay attention to how clean you are eating so today I’m sharing 5 quick tips to make your day healthier. While these aren’t going to get you bikini ready, they are easy ways to start rethinking your daily routine and how you can make even more, bigger changes in the future.
I partnered with OLLY Nutrition to share how I make small changes to live a healthier life.
1. My morning coffee is my everything. I’ve trained myself to drink it with no sugar and just a little bit of half and half. I know that not everyone will be able to quit the sugar (trust me, it’s probably in everything else I eat or drink during the day…). There are a few ways that you can sweeten your cup of joe more naturally like adding a little pure maple syrup. One of the things I really like to do is add a little bit of Ceylon cinnamon to my coffee. Since I use a coffee capsule, I add the spice to my cup after my coffee is brewed but you can also add it to your coffee grounds prior to brewing. Cinnamon has antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties and may help lower bad cholesterol. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that may help with arthritis pain and headaches. Plus it smells amazing and sort of tricks you in to thinking you added a sweetener to your coffee when you didn’t. Your brain can be so gullible.
2. Skip the pre-sweetned, flavored yogurts for your breakfast and get back to basics. Greek yogurt is a great way to boost your protein levels which I’m always struggling to get enough of (I’m a carb-loving kind of gal). It’s packed with probiotics and is high in potassium which is awesome (especially because I don’t enjoy bananas, except in desserts). And adding honey to naturally sweeten it adds even more health benefits. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and has been known to help alleviate allergies as well. Not all honey is created equal. Yes, the honey I’m showing is likely processed and missing a lot of the benefits of say, raw honey. But raw honey is much harder to work with (it’s a solid and if you heat it to make it spreadable that kills the good stuff…). Honey from a bear is still better than adding white sugar to your breakfast. It’s about making small changes so that you don’t quit and go back to old habits. 3. For years my sister had been telling me to have a doctor test my Vitamin D levels. Finally, right before school started, I had them checked. My doctor said I was just a little bit on the lower side and suggested I take a Vitamin D supplement daily. THIS WAS A LIFE CHANGER! I no longer feel like I have to take a nap at 3 pm anymore. It’s made such a huge difference for me and I’m guessing that this will help a lot of you out there too! While you can get Vitamin D from sun exposure, most of us either don’t have the time to hang out in the sun or are afraid to be out in the sun too long without sunscreen due to skin cancer. Check with your doctor to see if you should add Vitamin D in to your daily routine. I’m SO happy I did! (I found OLLY Vitamin D3 at Target but you can always buy it online!) Vitamin D does a lot of other great things for your body as well but the energy it gives me is what truly makes me love it!
4. Aside from the occasional glass of iced tea, I drink water all day long. We all know that water is the building block for our bodies and we need it to stay hydrated. But we can add things to it to make it even more healthful. Adding a slice of organic lemon to a glass of water not only makes it taste wonderful but helps add in Vitamin C. Lemons contain flavonoids which contain antioxidants, and other nourishing elements that help our bodies function. It’s also known to keep you, ahem, regular or help aid in indigestion. Plus its fragrant nature makes you smile. There is nothing better than the smell of fresh lemon! Switch this up with orange and limes and you’ll add in their health benefits as well. It’s such a simple trick! Plus it keeps you from getting bored with water because there are days when we just need something more.
5. The right multivitamin is essential if you want to make your day as healthy as possible. Like I mentioned before, when I put all my brain power towards eating right, I did really well. But I’ve got a business to run, a family to care for and TV to watch (it’s a priority and I’m not sorry about it). It’s always been a struggle to get in the suggested amounts of fruits and vegetables each day. The OLLY Women’s Super Foods Multivitamin is a FAST way to get your daily nutrients but also a boost of phytonutrients from 10 of the most nutritious foods on the planet! Which means you get all the antioxidants that come along with these fruits and veggies. Antioxidants are super important because they fight all those free radicals that can cause damage to our cells. Free radicals are such a bummer. They can do all kind of heinous stuff to us. But antioxidants sort of keep them in check. These OLLY Super Foods Multivitamins (in formulas for women, men and kids!) are like having two products in one since standard multivitamins do not have these antioxidants. The entire line of OLLY Super Foods Multivitamins can be found at all Target stores in the United States and at OLLY.com. But what’s awesome is that OLLY also offers a subscription service so you never run out! Visit OLLY.com to start your subscription and get your daily vitamins and minerals delivered right to your home or office. Use the code SUPER20 to get 20% off your first subscription of any OLLY products (expires 3/30/16).
I’m sure there are more things you’d like to do to make your day healthier. Once you make these simple changes, the bigger ones will not be so hard. Start changing your mindset and finding those little tweaks you can do to your routine and you’ll slowly be the healthiest gal on the block.
