Having art up on your walls is a great way to make your house feel like a home. But sometimes it’s hard to find just the right thing to hang. Here are 5 cool ways to personalize wall art and bring some of your family’s personality in to your home decor.
I love anything presidential, so for this past Christmas, my husband commissioned his artist friend to create this custom piece of art for me! It’s totally one of a kind and it’s all mine! I love that my husband was creative with a fun gift idea, a gift that I will always have and treasure. Upon appearances, it’s just art. But it is much more meaningful to me! It makes me smile every time I see it. And when you commission art, you can be specific with colors, etc. so it can be as outrageous or traditional as your are willing to go in your home (within reason, you don’t want to micro manage the artist!).My son finger painted this piece when he was a year or two old. When I was creating his 4th birthday party (which was an art show theme), I decided to scan this colorful painting and use it for the invitation. I also had it blown up to create art for the party. We loved it so much we decided to hang it in our home after the party! I love to pass it as I go down the hall way. And he feels pretty special that his art is in a prominent part of our home. When my oldest son was just starting to talk, he said the normal kid words. But one day, when we were in the car, a guy rode by on a bicycle. I said, “Say bicycle,” thinking I was being really funny. And he said the word, “bicycle,” plain as day! Of course I freaked out and called my husband to tell him what a genius our child was. It is a fun family memory. For a christmas present a few years ago, my husband commissioned the art work above (not the skateboards although another talented artist friend of my husband’s made those). Having art that reflects one of our child’s first words is so cool! It’s a great story to share with visitors and it’s art that we will one day be able to pass along to him, when I’m finally ready to part with it. Another awesome piece of personalized wall art we have is this skateboard. It was given to us as a gift by the company my husband worked for at the time and is engraved just for my son. It’s super special. It hangs on his wall and is a rad keepsake! You can pick up a blank maple deck and have it engraved (search for wood engravers in your area). This would make a great gift idea for you to give as well! He will not ride this board. Ever. It was such a thoughtful gift and he nerds out that it was made just for him. Starting with a basic family photo, my husband had a friend Photoshop in more “friends.” This photo was taken a few weeks before I gave birth to my second son so you can see part of my big old belly, plus this is the photo we used for our Christmas Cards that year. It is a total conversation starter and lives in our dining room where we can see it as we eat family meals. It’s funny, just like we are and is one of my favorite pieces of art. We’ve gotten to explain who each of these people is to the kids and our love of music, comedy and, again, presidents is represented in one image.
Clearly, I need to find more ways to create special art work that includes my second son. He is a little under represented…and while you may or may not have talented artist friends, like my husband does, you can certainly find someone via Etsy that can personalize wall art for your family!
