My living room is in desperate need of a full makeover. My husband and I both came to a conclusion recently at just about the same time. When you walk in to our house, our style is not represented. We are both very design oriented people, but you come in our house and it’s total blah. We are renters, so we make do with the wall colors. We just move our furniture to each new place we end up because I can’t see spending money on something that fits perfectly in the space we are in now for fear that in the future it won’t work in another house. But it isn’t us. And apparently we think next to the couch is the perfect spot to store extra art…(and please take special note of our Halloween decorating on the mantle. Yup. That’s it folks.)
My husband and I also realized that we don’t know what our style is. We totally need a style diagnostic. Emily Henderson, help! There are a few pieces that we would want to keep like my grandfather’s antique tea cart and some commissioned art work my husband had made for me (example A – our “family” photo above the fire-place. Why yes that is Sting, Cheney, Obama, Tina Fey, Will Ferrel and JFK in the photo with us…) But all our furniture can skeedaddle. And don’t even get me started on our mantle. What the heck do I do with that!?
Total boresville. We got the TV stand as a wedding present. It’s from Target. It’s done it’s time. It’s free to go. Note to designers: stop taking people’s TVs away because they are an eyesore. People like TV. Not only is it the focal point to my room it is the focal point to my life. Don’t even try to hide it. Embrace it. The giant ride on dino stays. Because it is a giant ride on dino. And the art above it and next to the TV stay. The musician piece was painted by my father-in-law and the other was done by a friend of my husband.
Do you have a room that you want to makeover? World Market is hosting a rad contest called the HGTV Passport to Style Sweepstakes. You should totally enter. Here is what I would buy if I won. While the couch we have now is quite possibly the world’s most comfortable couch, it is on it’s last legs. A nice, modern looking sofa in slate grey would be a really great replacement. And as you can tell from all the pops of colors and mixing of design styles, I’m a bit eclectic. I wonder what my husband would keep from this board and what he would absolutely veto?

So what room would you make over if you won? I think after my living room, I’d redo my bedroom. It is not the spa-like sanctuary I know it could be. And World Market even has great bathroom furniture and accessories if that room is not how you would like it to look.
