Easiest Gold Necklace Ever

Quickest DIY necklace everI figured out how to make the cheapest gold necklace ever.  Well, ok, it isn’t real gold but gold coated or something.  After my wardrobe consultation, I realized that a lot of the jewelry I own does not fit the look that I want to have.  So I have been slowly adding new pieces to my collection.  But I’m super cheap when it comes to accessories.  But I had this idea so I headed to the local craft store to see if it would work.

DIY gold knot necklace DIYI looked in the jewelry section for a gold chain that I like the look of.  I’m pretty sure that this one was $3.00.  And it might have even been cheaper because I think it was on sale.  Look for the longest chain that you can find.

DIY gold chain knot necklaceGrab the two ends and make a knot.  Boom.  Remember that you will have to fit it over your head so keep the knot close to the ends.  Or you can just undo the knot when you want to take it off.

simple gold necklace tutorial Super easy and pretty cute.  And since the chain won’t let the knot get too tight it kind of slips around so it looks a bit different each time you knot it.  And I didn’t have to buy any special jewelry making supplies.  And since my usual post partner in crime was out-of-town I had to take these photos of myself.  Super awkward but you get the point.

Mother Daughter Weekend Trip to Palm Springs

saguaro in palm springsA few weeks ago my mom and I took a mother/daughter trip to Palm Springs.  Her parents, my grandparents, retired out in the desert.  I think that is one of the reason’s that I love that area.  And my mom hadn’t been out to the actual Palm Springs area in about 10 years.  So we decided to head out on a Sunday for two nights of rest, relaxation and yummy food.  I’m going to warn you.  This post pretty much only contains food.  No joke.  We got in to town right at lunch time on Sunday and since I had never been to the Saguaro, I thought we should have lunch there.

Duck queso fundido at El Jefe at SaguaroMy mom is a very safe eater.  And by that I mean that she will usually only order what she has had before and knows she will like.  While I am not a very adventurous eater, I definitely like to try new things.  So she got crazy and let me direct most of the ordering.  At first she turned her nose up at my suggestion of this Duck Queso Fundido at El Jefe but it was delicious!  And I think it really showed her that she doesn’t need to be afraid to try something.  I’m not sure why I find this so funny but I have no idea how I turned out willing to try new things coming from a lady that never did!!

Tacos at El jefe at Saguaro Palm SpringsEl Jefe has a lot of tapas style plates to choose from so to go with our melted cheese, we opted for some tacos as well.  How gorgeous is that presentation!!

alcazar hotel palm springsI had been wanting to stay at the Alcazar for a while and was so glad to finally have the opportunity.  I’m going to do a full review over on The Trend Tribe soon so I will be sure to point you over there when it is up.  What I will mention here, though, is that the location is kind of amazing for this kind of a weekend.  The Alcazar is located in the North end of town near Trina Turk and all the home design stores.  There are two restaurants that are sort of part of the hotel but there as well as a few other great options in the area as well.  What we loved about this is that you could walk to dinner, have a few drinks and then walk back.  No one had to drive and you could immediately return to the room and get in to pajamas.  Wild, I tell you.

relaxing in hotel room in palm springsIf we weren’t eating, we were doing this.  I read probably about 10 magazines in those two days.  And luckily my mom enjoys Bravo as much as I do.  She really likes “that Nene.”

alcazar palm springs walkway to birba and cheekysI had been hearing amazing things about both restaurants run by the hotel, Birba and Cheeky’s, but every time we had come to Palm Springs in the past, both had been closed.  For the first night, we walked down a short path to the Birba.

arugala and fried garlic salad at birbaThe weather was amazing!  High of 85 and sunny!  We started with the Tricolore Salad that had fried garlic and was tossed in the most delicate olive oil and lemon juice for dressing.  YUM!

dinner at birbaMy mom hates to have her picture taken but I managed to sneak her in as I was trying to take a photo of the rest of the patio (PS, this restaurant is pretty much all patio – perfect for Palm Springs).

potato pizza at birba palm springsNext we shared a pizza topped with potatoes, a whole bunch of cheeses and pesto.  The crust was insanely good!  I totally want to go back to try more kinds of the pizza.  Had enough?  Click through to read more!  [Read more...]

Land of Nod is Super Rad

*Hey you guys.  This post contains affiliate links.  Read on to find out what that means!

land of nod bannerUm, you guys.  Land of Nod is rad.  Did you know that?  They have never been on my radar (not that I know everything about everything but I like to think I know cool kids stuff).  Well, I take that back.  I feel like I remember looking at a catalogue around the time I was registering at Crate and Barrel for my wedding (owned by the same company).  That was 10 years ago.  It did not leave a big impression on me.  That was partially because I wasn’t even thinking of kids yet, but also the items just weren’t my style.  And so I never thought about them again.  I guess my sister-in-law (who started this blog with me) liked them because I found this post way back in 2008!  But then I started seeing them pinning some pretty cool party inspiration for their Alt Summit party.  I was excited to see what they were about.  And when I went to said party, I was blown away!  They were cool!  They were out of catalogues but I made sure to go online as soon as I got back from that trip.  Land of Nod is RAD!

land of nod cool boys room We are on the verge of buying my son a bed.  Which really makes me want to redecorate his whole room.  Here are the dream items I picked out from the site to make over his room.  How awesome are those wipe off award ribbons for the wall?  And that tiger king print?  LOVE!  I didn’t pick out a comforter because I really want to make one.  I’ve always wanted to scan his drawings and have them made in to fabric.  Cool, right?  I’m going to be sharing some of my Land of Nod faves each month.  There is SO much great stuff on the site.  And even those of us without a million dollars can find things in our price ranges.  There are also unique gift ideas!

Bed  .  Trundle  .  “O” pillow  .  Boombox Pillow  .    Stripey Sheets  .  Blue Pattern Rug  .  Elephant Hooks  .  Bucket Caddies  .  Wall Shelves  .  Treasure Box  .  Monster Wall Decal  .  Wipe Off Ribbons  .  Tiger Print

One thing I would like to add is that I signed up for their affiliate program.  What that means is that I am going to put a button on my sidebar that will take you right over to their site.  Also, the links in this post are hooked up through their affiliate program.  So if you were to purchase something, I would get a very tiny percentage.  It just makes sense.  I’m super excited about them and want you all to check out the awesomeness anyway so there might as well be some reward if you love it too!  I may or may not let you know about special sales they are having if it is something I think you would want to know about.  I didn’t want to just put up a button and not tell you the whole story.  That’s not how I roll.   I have nothing to hide.

I would love to hear what you think of Land of Nod.  I’m smitten!  Oh!  And you should check out their blog too.  So much great stuff!

*Not a sponsored post.  I fell in love when I saw the site and even more when I saw the catalogue (you guys, it is so beautifully shot and styled!!).  All opinions are mine!

Cool Bleach T-Shirt for Kids

cool clothes for boysAfter I threw my son’s space party, and made shirts for all the kids, I have loved buying inexpensive blank t-shirts and doing fun things with them.  For this shirt, you just need a little bleach.

plain black tshirt

Start with a blank dark colored T-shirt.  Sometimes you can find packs of Hanes dark colored t-shirts at Target in the underwear section but they are pretty hard to find.  I love Wal-Mart for their kid’s blank T-shirts and sweatshirts.

bleach in spray bottleGrab a spray bottle with bleach in it.  That is my attempt at drawing a skull and crossbones.  In my head I am super artistically skilled.  But there is a disconnect between my brain and my hands.  Obviously.

spray bleach on plain kids tshirt

You should probably use some sort of a drop cloth.  My landlord had just told us that he was moving back in the night before I took these photos.  So I didn’t really feel the need to be extra careful.  I’m sure you understand.  And we are really experiencing my amazing photo taking and editing skills in this post today.  They are all over the place.

bleach spray tshirt for cool kidsSpray it as much or as little as you want.  In my opinion, less looks better.  I did not show what I did to the back of the shirt for this reason.  It is not as cute as the front.  Too much can be, well, too much.

let bleach sitLet the bleach sit until it changes color a bit.  The longer it sits, the whiter it becomes (I’m pretty sure…)  While you are waiting you will start contemplating squirting bleach on every black thing you own.  Like your Toms.  I didn’t do it.  But I’m pretty sure it is going to happen in the very near future.

bleach tshirt for kidsWhen you like the color, throw it in the wash by itself to get all the bleach out.  I don’t use bleach.  Like, ever.  I’m afraid of it.  So I’m not sure if this is proper treatment of bleached items or washing machines.  Feel free to rinse the shirt out first if you don’t want to just toss it in the machine.
