What does it say about me that a movie called ‘Bad Moms’ is totally “on brand” for Cupcakes and Cutlery…When I first heard about the Bad Moms movie I got super excited. I even went out of my way to ask if I could help promote this movie. Long story short, this movie is about moms learning to make time for themselves and not always put their family’s first and generally doing less on purpose. AMEN! When I first became a mom (10 years ago), you were considered selfish if you tried to have interests other than attending to your child. I am glad to say that we have progressed a little bit past this now and many women do have hobby’s or even jobs that they love and aren’t vilified too harshly for. But we are a long way from finding balance and this movie wants to help change that. While this movie is SO MUCH EFFING FUN, I still think it is important for all parents to see. I was invited to screen the movie and attend the press junket but all of these thoughts are my own. I’m proud to say I’m a “bad mom” and I hope you will be too.
I LOVE TO READ! Unfortunately, I don’t get the opportunity very often. Finally, my 4th grader is starting to show an interest in reading and I’m all about encouraging that. I know that I need to lead by example so I started looking for a book to read. I’m not in to the classics. I like to keep things light and fun. While away at a recent conference, I got invited to celebrate the launch of Alison Sweeney’s new book, Opportunity Knocks. I was SO bummed that I couldn’t be in LA to cheer her on. But I asked them to send me the book so I could review it. And they did. Along with the goodie bag from the event which was filled to the brim with It Cosmetics. I am in total girly heaven! I think Alison Sweeney books are going to be my perfect summer books! I started reading the book but I had to stop. Not because it was poorly written or I hated it. I stopped because it’s awesome. I got a few chapters in and was hooked. I’m a pretty fast reader and I’ve got a plane ride coming up. One without my kids. My favorite place to read is on an airplane where I can dive in to a book and read it while I block out gross seat mates and savor that time to myself. I’m going to save the rest of this book for my flight to Texas (I get to see my very best friend, I can’t wait! I’ll probably take all my new makeup up to play with). What I can tell you is that it will be hard not to pick it up again before I head out on my trip. In fact, I think I’ll pick up two more Alison Sweeney books to take with me as well! These books are perfect for summer readingOpportunity Knocks is about a Los Angeles based makeup artist, Alex, who is trying to build her career. She’s a hard worker, taking jobs she’s not especially proud of to climb the ladder. Finally she gets the opportunity to work with a lifestyle mogul that really catapults her career. But, this mogul is temperamental to say the least. And Alex finds herself in hot water after saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. Thanks to a non-disclosure agreement breech, Alex has to come up with the 5 million dollar penalty or who knows what the mogul will do to her.

Sounds amazing, right?! I know you probably think it’s odd that I did a review before actually reviewing the book. But I KNOW from what I read, I’m going to love it. I’ll come back and update the post after my trip and let you know about the other books too! If you are looking for a good summer read, you should definitely pick up Opportunity Knocks. We can start a virtual book club!
*I was sent this book for review and a makeup swag bag from the Alison Sweeney book launch party. Shop It Cosmetics at Ulta! All opinions are mine!
Do you ever have one of those days? Yeah, one of THOSE days where either everything is going wrong or you just feel blah? I’ve been having way more of them than I would like to. So I decided that I needed to figure out how to get myself out of my funk when I find myself in a downward spiral headed towards rocking back and forth in a corner. I love essential oils and have tons of them. So I decided I needed to be more intentional with using them. Regardless of your belief in oils, they smell amazing. And to me, good smells help me shift my mind frame. Plus I’m a border-line hippie. So there’s that. I made this DIY room spray to bring the good vibes. I think you’re going to like it.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t spend time with your family on Mother’s Day. I’m just saying that maybe part of your gift could be these 5 things plus an hour or so to enjoy them without having to run all over town or handle your usual mom duties. It’s pretty much the perfect Mother’s Day celebration if you ask me! Just send this post to your husband…
I’m not one of those gals that can skip a meal. I generally start thinking about lunch right after breakfast. And while I love food, I don’t want to spend a ton of time preparing anything. These quick lunch ideas for mom are perfect for the busy mom who has a long to-do list but wants to eat something delicious.
Avocado toast is so trendy right now. They might even be the new donut… I just learned to love avocados over the last few years so it’s a relatively new ingredient for me to play around with. I don’t love (but hate is such a strong word…) mayonnaise, so swapping it out with avocado is the best idea ever! Tuna was literally the only thing I ever used mayo for (like, 1/2 tsp) so having a way to make tuna without it is crazy cool. Plus I hear avocados have good fats. And I like fats. – by Elise Bauer via Simply Recipes
Again with the avocado toast! I know, you’ll probably burn out of avocado toasts but I also LOVE a caprese salad. It’s really a versatile lunch option. The fresh basil, yummy tomatoes and mozzarella cheese are the perfect blend of flavors. And it’s super easy to mix in other flavors to create more lunch ideas. The avocado will add a wonderful creaminess to this open-faced sandwich. You can add a slice of turkey for more protein. Or you can close that bad boy up and make it in to a full-fledged sandwich. This is also great to serve if you invite a mom friend over for lunch. It’s super simple to make but full of flavor and you KNOW they’ll enjoy it. – by Two Peas and Their Pod
I’m addicted to farro. And while it takes a few minutes to cook, you then have it to use for meals for the rest of that week. Adding the bright, fresh mediterranean flavors makes this the perfect mom lunch idea for spring. I’d leave out the sun-dried tomatoes, because gross. And I’m just finding that I like Feta cheese now too. Although it smells like feet, it has a nice salty flavor that is really great with fresh veggies. The farro is hearty and filling and can really bulk up a salad, which I love. Another lunch option is my farro and roasted vegetable salad. – by Gimme Some Oven
This recipe is really for BLT Chicken Caesar Salad Wraps but I’m not big on sauces so I’d leave the dressing off. I eat a lot of chicken but you know that can get a little boring. The fresh tomato and lettuce keeps this juicy (especially without the sauce) and the bacon adds that special touch of love that only it can. It’s hearty but different enough from a sandwich that it will provide some variety in your lunch routine. I really don’t make wraps as much as I should. Mmmm, maybe add a little bbq sauce…Ok, I’m having a wrap today. – by Mom on Time Out
I find it so hard to stay full and satisfied during the day. My food choices are often not the best that they could be (looking at you, Doritos.) Hard boiled eggs are a great way to get in some protein and the addition of this salty sweet marinade is an interesting twist on an old, boring classic. This might not be considered a full meal, but chomping these eggs, along with a small salad (or even as a topping on the salad) would be a great simple lunch idea for mom. – by Genius Recipes via Food 52 – photo by James Ransom
