Behind the Scenes of Small Things are Big Things

dirty-side-of-blogging-logoA pretty instagram from @karanoellawsonI have met a ton of rad people through blogging.  One of my favorites is Kara Noel from Small Things are Big Things.  I do not know her well, but she amazes me in every capacity.  She is a fantastic mom of 4, super crafty, funny and totally real.  While she shares cool DIYs that she makes and also her adorable children on instagram, she is not afraid to show you her behind the scenes chaos either.  I’m so glad that she is sharing this with us today.  This top photo is of a craft she made on a book case, that she probably also made, in her home.

A behind the scenes look at some of your favorite bloggers #dirtysideofbloggingAnd this is what was behind her while she was taking that shot.  This scene is totally familiar to bloggers with children.  BTW I get kind of stalker-y about her youngest daughter.  She is so darling!

A behind the scenes look from @karanoellawson and most other bloggers #dirtysideofbloggingAnd these are the shelves below the one that made it on to Instagram.  I totally remember having the great divide on book shelves when the kids were small.  Our nice vases were on the top half and the kids books and toys were on the bottom.  I’m so happy to report that my kids have outgrown that stage!

Thank you, Kara, for keeping it real!

On Location Shooting

shooting fashion posts on location when you have kids mean you all take a field trip.As a blogger, sometimes you have to find the right place to shoot a post.  And sometimes that means that you have to drag your kids along on a little field trip.  But they usually find a way to keep themselves busy.  Like rolling around on the sidewalk.  And trying to stand in the street with you.  You can see the final shots from this impromptu neighborhood street shoot here.

And btw, are you following me on Google plus?

A Perfect Instagram Moment

dirty-side-of-blogging-logoA beautifully styled instagram post by A Fabulous FeteI am SO happy to have Lauren on the blog today.  You see that perfectly perfect, styled photo above?  Lauren puts out the most gorgeous Instagram photos.  Style just comes so naturally to her.  But guess what is just outside even her perfect shot…

This is what is just outside of a perfectly styled instagram photo by A Fabulous Fete.See the red shoes on top of  the white dresser below the window?  That is the beginning stages of a perfectly lovely shoe shot.  I totally appreciate Lauren sharing this with me.  I love that we can all keep it really real.

Conference Swag Pile Up

dirty-side-of-blogging-logo

Sometimes you get so much swag from a conference that you don't even know where to put it away and it sits in your kitchen. For, like, ever.Bloggers sometimes end up with a crazy amount of swag from conferences.  Sometimes it is so much, you don’t even know where to put it away.  So it sits in your kitchen for about 3 months (and counting)…

Splurge vs. Save

sparkling wineShhhh.  Don’t tell anyone.  I’m guessing that most other bloggers are guilty of this little switcheroo too.  My shoots happen in the morning when I have the best light in my kitchen.  And while this might be prime mimosa time, it’s usually not practical to drink the drinks you need to pour for your styled shoot.  So while I may use a higher end brand in some of  the photos (La Marca is only $10 at Costco so I guess it isn’t really higher end – but it super yummy and I actually like to drink it) the bottle is not actually opened.  Instead, I swap out a less expensive one (in this case about $5) to use in the detail shots because then I feel better pouring it out.  What are your tricks?
