Photoshoot Styling is Messy

dirty-side-of-blogging-logoStyled photo shoots are pretty but just out of the frame is a beautiful mess of props at the ready. Image via @melisscCreates // www.cupcakesandcutlery.comToday I’m sharing what it really looks like when photoshoot styling for a blog post.  This photo was sent to me by my friend Melissa of Melissa Creates.  Often, your table is no where near the place it should be.  You drag it over to the closest window and pretend that your dining table is really situated in your fabulous, glowing dining room and not in the middle of your living room.  And you have other props ready to go lying just outside the frame.  So while you table is all party, your couch is all business.  Here is her finished post with the rest of the styled photos.

And did you know that Melissa opened a shop?  Well she did.  Go check it out!

A Pat on the Back for Bloggers

dirty-side-of-blogging-logoDoes anyone else geek out when they get this message in WordPress? Please forgive this grainy iPhone photo.  Cameras do not like to shoot computer screens.  But I can’t tell you how many of this photo I have saved to my camera library on my phone.  Something about seeing this box pop up makes me positively giddy.  In an online world where you can feel disconnected for real humans, and you crave interaction via comments or likes, this little box can be so gratifying.  Please tell me I’m not alone…

Behind the Scenes of Small Things are Big Things

dirty-side-of-blogging-logoA pretty instagram from @karanoellawsonI have met a ton of rad people through blogging.  One of my favorites is Kara Noel from Small Things are Big Things.  I do not know her well, but she amazes me in every capacity.  She is a fantastic mom of 4, super crafty, funny and totally real.  While she shares cool DIYs that she makes and also her adorable children on instagram, she is not afraid to show you her behind the scenes chaos either.  I’m so glad that she is sharing this with us today.  This top photo is of a craft she made on a book case, that she probably also made, in her home.

A behind the scenes look at some of your favorite bloggers #dirtysideofbloggingAnd this is what was behind her while she was taking that shot.  This scene is totally familiar to bloggers with children.  BTW I get kind of stalker-y about her youngest daughter.  She is so darling!

A behind the scenes look from @karanoellawson and most other bloggers #dirtysideofbloggingAnd these are the shelves below the one that made it on to Instagram.  I totally remember having the great divide on book shelves when the kids were small.  Our nice vases were on the top half and the kids books and toys were on the bottom.  I’m so happy to report that my kids have outgrown that stage!

Thank you, Kara, for keeping it real!

On Location Shooting

dirty-side-of-blogging-logo

shooting fashion posts on location when you have kids mean you all take a field trip.As a blogger, sometimes you have to find the right place to shoot a post.  And sometimes that means that you have to drag your kids along on a little field trip.  But they usually find a way to keep themselves busy.  Like rolling around on the sidewalk.  And trying to stand in the street with you.  You can see the final shots from this impromptu neighborhood street shoot here.

And btw, are you following me on Google plus?

This is what is just outside of a perfectly styled instagram photo by A Fabulous Fete.See the red shoes on top of  the white dresser below the window?  That is the beginning stages of a perfectly lovely shoe shot.  I totally appreciate Lauren sharing this with me.  I love that we can all keep it really real.
